Horizon has something we want you to see: a 90-minute program on the early history of our state. It's called Birth of a Colony: North Carolina, and it airs Monday, October 24th at 9:00pm on UNC-TV.
Produced in partnership with the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources and UNC-TV, this program shows a side of Horizon you may not have seen before. The side that creates top-notch documentaries.
Writer/producer/director Tim Finkbiner, who is also Horizon's vice president, spent three years researching, writing, shooting and editing this project. At one point or another during that time literally every person on our staff assisted him. To give just a couple of examples, the gorgeous high-definition photography was the work of Joe Anthony and Jim Colman. The lush, evocative sound design belongs to Brian McPherson.
Historical images were a particular challenge; this story takes place hundreds of years before the invention of photography. Tim scoured archives for historical documents, paintings and drawings. Then our graphic artists Jason McGuigan, Mark Kowal and Jason Kane brought them to life by separating the images into layers and creating the illusion of movement.
An advisory team of six North Carolina historians, scholars and authors made sure the story was accurate, and interviews with nine experts helped us bring it to life.
We believe this is an extraordinary historical documentary - one of the best ever produced in our state - and we invite you to experience it. Birth of a Colony: North Carolina airs Monday, October 24th at 9:00pm on UNC-TV.
